Autism

Hello and welcome to our Autism support group. Its for discussing Autism and how it is to live with a person that has this syndrome and how to face life and how to help others to understand more about autism .

Autism is a severe developmental disorder that begins at birth or within the first two-and-a-half years of life. Most autistic children are perfectly normal in appearance, but spend their time engaged in puzzling and disturbing behaviors which are markedly different from those of typical children. Less severe cases may be diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) or with Asperger's Syndrome (these children typically have normal speech, but they have many "autistic" social and behavioral problems).

I do not have any family members with autism, though my son has ADHA. I found this video that just astounded me, and I wanted to share it with you who do have autistic loved ones.

The Human Camera - This is a video of an amazing artist who happens to be autistic.
Stephen Wiltshire from London is a star among savants. Stephen is autistic. He did not speak his first words "pencil" and "paper" until he was 5. Yet, when he was 11 he drew a perfect aerial view of London after only one helicopter ride. In this film he is flying over in Rome.

I have a son with asburgers and a friend with a daughter that suffers with it as well....It is hard sometimes but being a mom I know it has it's rewards.

I have been blessed with a son with autism. He has an incredible sense of direction, which means he shows me the way home when I become lost. Usually, it starts out with my saying, "I sure hope you know where you are going," and he does. The children in his class have commented on his ability to sculpt, and my jaw has dropped when I have seen some of his creations. He is a Leo, which means frequently we butt heads (Aries mom, Leo son. We both can't be the boss, but we sure as heck try). I think children and adults with autism tend to be very intelligent and talented. If we don't give up on them, I am sure they won't give up on us.

My son was first diagnosed with ADHD and a minor mental retardation due to problems with giving birth wich resulted in lack of oxygene . Later on this year he also got the diagnosis A-typical Autism. My other half is testing for Asperger or ADHD syndrome as well , I have ADHD and DID , My youngest daughter is going to be tested for ADHD too ,so in this family the only one without any known dysfunctional issue is my oldest daughter ehm. It can be very educational as well as difficult from time to time , but mostly I would like to say that it is rather amuzing. Our life is more of a rollercoaster , we never know how the other person is about to react to things and matters and we constantly try to figure out how to meat everyones needs and how to communicate . Signlanguage works pretty well , screaming and shouting does not.To be calm and reasonable in a stressful situation might sound like an excellent idea but that is the most hardest thing to be .

My son has bipolar and is developmentally challenged. At first they thought it was a form of autism. But later they changed it.
My heart goes out to the parents as well as the children. I know what challenges they both have in their lives.
Blessings

Public schools just do not have the money to give all children everything they need. My eldest daughter I also homeschooled. She had a 180 IQ at age 6 and drove her teacher crazy. I took her out; as well, before home schooling was legal in our state. We fought many battles to keep her at home. She graduated from high school with a GED at age 16 and was excepted into Harvard, but chose to go to school In Denver instead and has never moved back. Now she is soon to be 34 and has her own little girl to battle the schools for.

Hi Sherri, My son is also extremely intelligent but he has the disadvantage of being in a school for children in need of special education . I would rather see him having one teacher and fewer pupils in class. One that could spend enough time with him to teach him to read and write in his own way. He can´t you see yet but I am certain that if he got the change to be one to one with the teacher in less then a week he will be fluent in reading and writing . He has drawing scills that are highly developed for his age and he has the most fascinating questions . He is like a little old man in a childs body totaly misunderstood :)
Its hard to describe really .

Hello,

My name is Sherri. My youngest daughter was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome when she was 14 years old. I knew way before that age there was something diffe3rent with her but when she was younger the medical profession did believe girls could have As; and so, even with all the testing I insisted she have done at my expense she was not diagnosed. I was told instead she was very intelligent and was just young for her age.
At age two years and one week 'A" had seizure flurries, when you add the time of the thee flurries together they equal almost an hour of down time. These flurries cause traumatic brain injury in her temporal lobe. Adding a new demotion to her learning issues. "A" has a few other learning issues which I will not go into at this time, which made her interesting to teach.
When she was going into the 7th grade I removed her from the public school system as they could not handle her dramatic range of skills. She scored into the 11th grade in science and first grade in math. I home schooled here through high school. Once she was home schooled she quickly took off and graduated at 17.
